All Snakes Day
Ireland never knew snakes in the grass.
That was never the haunting.
The serpents Saint Patrick was said to banish
were not flesh, fang, or scale,
but the old gods, the old rites,
the bone-deep beliefs that once breathed through the land
like mist over sacred hills.
But history is rarely a clean severing.
The old ways were never truly buried.
They slipped beneath the surface,
veiled in prayer, hidden in custom,
stitched into folklore, candle flame, holy wells, and whispered charms.
What was condemned did not always die.
Sometimes it simply learned how to wear a different name.
