Entropy is the pause in Shiva’s dance, the stillness between destruction and creation. It can feel like emptiness, numbness, or the sudden loss of spark. Yet in myth and in life, these pauses are never meaningless. They are thresholds.
When entropy visits me, it feels like silence in my bones. I used to fight it, fearing it meant something was wrong. Now I see it as a kind of inner weather, clouds passing across my sky. If I stop trying to fix the pause and let it be, it begins to show me its quiet fertility.
In myth, Shiva’s dance (Nataraja) is the rhythm of the cosmos itself, every step dissolves what has been, every gesture awakens what is yet to come. His fire burns worlds away, and his drum calls them back into being. The dance is endless, destruction and creation are inseparable movements of the same body.
In the Shadow of Entropy, this dance shows up inside us as numbness, inertia, or loss of spark. It feels like something is being destroyed in us, yet we cannot yet see what is being born. That pause, that void, is the stage on which new life will eventually appear.
Richard uses the word entropy because it mirrors a law of physics, energy withdrawing from activity into stillness, order dissolving back into apparent disorder. In human life, it feels like depression or flatness. But in truth, just like Shiva’s dance, it is not the end, it is the cycle returning to its beginning.
Every pause points to a pulse. Entropy conceals the seed of creativity.
A DOORWAY
- When has numbness in my life later revealed a hidden seed, rather than being a sign of failure?
- If my low states are part of my inner weather, how can I honor them instead of resisting or running from them?
- When I withdraw into silence, what fears or beliefs surface and how might I meet them differently?
- When I rush to fill the emptiness with activity, what am I really trying to escape?
- What kind of creation might be gestating in me right now, unseen, waiting for its right moment?
