Most of you answered my question “what do you struggle with most in your singing?” with one word: CONFIDENCE. So let’s talk about it!
Confidence is not something you’re born with, it’s something you build. First, remember this: your voice is unique, each voice is different. Some are soft, some are powerful, others are fragile, some take time to grow, and that’s EXACTLY what makes the voice so beautiful. You cannot compare your voice to someone else’s, just like you cannot compare yourself to anyone else. There is only one you, and your voice is part of you — it mirrors your body, your emotions, your mindset. If you’re tired, your voice will be tired, when you’re excited and happy, your voice will be too! Our voice mirrors our state. If you feel free, confident, and open, guess what, your voice will be too.
So how do we build confidence?
1. Shift your mindset before you sing!!!
Tell yourself: “I'm going to sing great today, I can do this, I don't care what anybody else thinks, if it sucks it sucks and if it's good, it's good.” Cause the thing is, every effort you make, every note you sing, good or bad, it's part of the process and it's GREAT! Also, keep low expectations and your perfectionism out the door during your lessons (especially), as confidence grows when it's free from pressure.
2. Stop comparing!!!
You cannot compare your voice to others, just like you cannot compare yourself to others, because each voice is unique. So, instead of comparing, start discovering! Tell yourself: “Let's see what my voice can do today” Your colour, your texture, your emotion, that is your power.
3. Dare, dare, dare!!!
DARE to push the boundaries of your voice, sing in ways that are unusual (like make monkey sounds, sing upside down, I can go on forever with this...), because you'll discover parts/facets of your voice you didn't even know existed. Don't be afraid to sing a false note, crack in the middle of a run, forget your lyrics, because in the end, we ALWAYS learn from it anyway! Be gentle with yourself and your voice will be gentle to you :"Ohh that note was off...why is that? Maybe I lacked support, let me work on that!" or "Why do I have such an airy voice today? Oh yeah, I went to bed at 3am last night, I'm tired, that's why. Let me work on exercices that help closing the vocals chords". Those mind sets are healthy!
One of my students recently cried after singing in front of someone for the first time. She has performance anxiety, but lesson after lesson she choses to have the right mindset which went from shy and scared to willing and daring, she stopped comparing herself and started to accept this is HER voice, and she dares more and more every time. And that's what makes my job so fun, to watch this develop!
Let me know in the comments if you also struggle with CONFIDENCE. Is there anything else you'd like to improve during practice, performance, or even just on a personal level?
