The Gas Station That Changed Everything
I was heading home from work one day when I stopped to get gas. I pulled in, took out my credit card, swiped it…
Declined.
I froze.
I had just checked my balance the day before. I knew—without a doubt—that I had a thousand dollars left on that card. I knew because, besides the $27 sitting in my bank account, that credit card was the only money my husband and I had left.
My husband had been unemployed for over a year.
I had just started a brand-new career as a realtor.
We had four kids at home.
And we had just found out we were expecting another baby.
We didn’t know when our next paycheck was coming—or if it was coming at all.
But if you’ve ever had a credit card, you know the truth: that limit is not your money. At any moment, the company can check your credit, see the red flags—see the maxed-out cards, the minimum payments, the struggles—and lower your limit without warning.
And that’s exactly what happened to me.
That $5,000 limit? It became $4,000 overnight.
And that day, it all caught up with me at a gas station.
Honestly, it doesn’t even matter how we got there. That’s the point.
Life hits all of us.
It could have been addiction.
A health crisis.
A failed business.
A loss in the family.
A bad accident.
In our case, my husband had tried to build something that didn’t work out.
We went through our savings.
Through our credit cards.
Through everything.
And I was carrying it all.
It felt like I had my husband and four kids piled on a sled, and I was the pregnant woman trying to drag them up a snowy mountain by myself.
Just trying to survive.
Trying to be strong.
Trying not to crumble.
And if I sat down to rest, we would all slide back down the mountain.
But right there—at the gas station, embarrassed and exhausted—I felt completely and utterly defeated.
Not hopeless, though.
Because even in that moment, I still had God.
I still had the prophetic words spoken over me months before:
that He would restore everything that had been taken,
that I was stepping into a new season,
that blessings would come.
But six months had passed since that word…
and this was what my life looked like.
So yes—I believed God, but I was also human.
And in that moment, I was tired, broken, and done pretending I was okay.
And that’s when it happened.
Not a miracle.
Not a magical deposit into our bank account - although that would have been nice!
Not a rescue.
A memory.
I remembered a sermon my pastor had preached—once a year he talks about tithing. He had told us about a young man had emailed him asking about tithing
Pastor Tom replied to him with Malachi 3:10:
10 Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple. If you do,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, “I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in! Try it! Put me to the test!
And then he said something I will never forget:
“This is the only place in Scripture where God invites you to test Him.”
Right there, at the gas pump, tears starting to fall, I felt the Holy Spirit whisper to my heart:
“Test Me.”
So I did.
I made a decision in that exact moment—I didn’t wait until things got better.
I didn’t wait for my next commission check.
Or a safety net.
Or a cushion.
I said, “Okay Lord. Whatever comes in, I will give You 10%. I’ll test You like You said.”
And listen… it was not bold faith.
It was not joyful faith.
The New Testament says God loves a joyful giver, but that day?
I was a scared giver.
A trembling giver.
A “God, please don’t let this ruin us” giver.
When that next paycheck hit, my stomach dropped.
We needed every penny.
We had four kids and one on the way.
My husband had no income. And we had bills to pay.
The math did not math.
But right then, the Holy Spirit reminded me of another scripture spoken over me prophetically:
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take
—Proverbs 3:5–6
So I chose trust—even when nothing made sense.
I chose not to lean on my own understanding—even though that’s all I knew how to do.
I chose to submit my finances, my fear, and my future to Him—even when it made no sense.
And my obedience showed up before my feelings did.
I hit “submit” on that tithe with shaking hands.
And everything began to change.
The blessings began Immediately
The same month we tithed for the first time, my husband got a job offer. After a year of searching. A year of dead ends. A year of discouragement.
Then I began closing real estate deals.
And get this:
My first full year in real estate, I only worked nine months because we had the baby…
but I still became the #1 buyer’s agent on the team.
Things were shifting.
God was moving.
But it wasn’t just financial.
It was spiritual.
Tithing broke the stress off my life
As I continued tithing, something heavy fell off me:
stress.
anxiety.
the need to control everything.
When you trust God with your finances, you start trusting Him with your whole life.
I learned that praise, worship, and gratitude aren’t “cute” Christian habits.
They are weapons.
I carry a prophetic picture in my mind:
I’m in a boxing ring, fighting a giant.
He’s beating me down. I’m losing, and it looks like there’s no way I could come back and win
Then I go to my corner and start worshiping the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.
And suddenly my glove falls off and grows bigger and bigger until it knocks my opponent out in one blow.
That’s how I see spiritual warfare now.
The stressor is the opponent.
Worship knocks it out
I learned to trust people again
I also learned to trust others.
I learned to trust the people God placed over me spiritually.
Like our prophetic prayer team.
And the voices that spoke God’s heart over me.
I leaned into the prophetic words spoken over my life—even when my circumstances looked nothing like the promises.
Those words carried me when I was too tired to carry myself.
My husband’s heart began to change
One of the most beautiful parts of this journey is what happened in my marriage.
My husband began praying again.
He began believing again.
He started stepping into leadership and faith.
Not because I preached at him—
but because he saw God moving.
Then, I began hearing the Holy Spirit with clarity—for myself and for others.
As mentioned earlier, I’m a Realtor. And I’ll never forget this one home I had listed…
Beautiful home. Great location. Renovated. Priced right.
But something felt off.
The house felt heavy.
I held an open house, and no one came.
So I prayed for two hours.
I prayed in tongues.
I commanded every evil spirit to leave.
I blessed the home, the family, the land, and the future buyers.
I declared abundance and peace.
And the next week?
We received competing offers. After 60 days on the market! That’s unheard of!
That wasn’t a coincidence.
That was authority.
Two Years Later… the Floodgates Opened
At the time, these shifts felt small.
Normal.
Day-to-day life. Things I was waiting for.
But now, two years later, I can see the full picture:
We paid off all of our bad debt.
We rebuilt our credit.
We saved for a new home.
My income exploded.
My faith deepened.
My marriage strengthened.
My spiritual gifts sharpened.
From one yr to the next, God 10x’d my income.
And here’s the miracle inside the miracle:
if I made 10% of this year’s income last year…
and I tithe at least 10%…
That means the amount I earned in year 1
is the amount I am tithing in year 2!
Read that again:
This year, I am able to tithe my entire yr 1 salary.
That is Malachi 3:10 in real life.
That is “pour out a blessing you cannot contain.”
That is God keeping His Word.
That is Kingdom multiplication.
My Encouragement to You
If you feel hopeless…
lost…
broken…
tired…
like you’re standing at your own gas station moment…
Please hear me:
Your feelings are temporary.
But the Word of God is eternal.
He never lies.
He never fails.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart.
Lean not on your own understanding.
Submit every part of your life to Him…
And He will make your paths straight.
If you don’t know where to start?
Start where I started:
Test Him.
Try it.
Give God something to bless.
He has plans to prosper you.
I declare this over you:
Whatever your gas station moment is, it’s not the end of your story.
It’s the beginning of your testimony.
The same God who met me on empty is about to meet you in power.
Test Him. Trust Him. Watch Him move.
And stay obedient. He will change your life in ways you can’t even imagine
