BREAKING : The US Government Just Took Anthropic's Top Models Offline

Big one today.

On Friday evening, June 12, Anthropic disabled public access to Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 after receiving a federal export control directive citing national security

What happened.

The order landed at 5:21pm ET and requires Anthropic to block access to both models for any foreign national, inside or outside the US, including its own foreign national staff.

There is no clean way to enforce that on a live global product, so Anthropic pulled both models for everyone. All other models, including Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku, stay online.

The stated reason.

The government points to a jailbreak of Fable 5. Anthropic says the technique is narrow: hand the model a codebase, ask it to fix flaws, and it surfaces minor, already known vulnerabilities. The company argues other public models, including OpenAI's GPT-5.5, can do the same thing without any bypass at all.

The backdrop.

This is not the first clash. Back in February, Anthropic's Pentagon contract talks collapsed over the company's refusal to allow Claude to be used for fully autonomous weapons and mass domestic surveillance. The government later labeled Anthropic a "supply chain risk," a designation usually reserved for foreign adversaries. Anthropic sued, and that litigation is still active.

Why it matters.

By multiple accounts, this is the first time a leading AI company has pulled a publicly deployed model at the federal government's direction. Anthropic calls the move a misunderstanding and says it is working to restore access, with more technical detail promised within 24 hours.
