With all of the different stats in baseball its no surprise that players can make a difference on a team even with a lower AVG. the current example that comes to mind is The big dumper (Cal Raleigh). He is holding a .240 AVG which is ties for #123 in the MLB. Not a fantastic average, however his league leading 51 HR and 109 RBIs far outweigh that. Does this mean that batting AVG is outdated?
I don't believe so, I still think AVG is a very crucial stat. However i do feel that when looking at AVG you also need to look and what kind of player it is. Bombers typically have lower AVG but drive in runs for their team. You wouldn't want your lead off hitter to only be hitting .200-.240 that sets your team up for failure.
You also have to consider overall AVG vs. Streak AVG. Some players like Max Muncy started off the season with a .150 AVG and then make a late season run. Muncy for example hit for an AVG of .333 in august this year. significantly better than his original start. What do you think?
