📖 Freedom with DeFi: Ultimate Terminology Cheat Sheet
Welcome to your DeFi Translator! Whenever you hear a confusing word on a live call or in the community feed, look it up right here. Every term is explained in simple plain English so you can talk and act like a seasoned on-chain professional. I wanted to make sure I covered as much as possible.
1. 🛡️ Security, Wallets & Fundamentals (OpSec & Self-Custody)
🔑 Self-Custody (Being Your Own Bank)
- Plain English: At a regular bank, the bank holds your money. In DeFi self-custody, YOU ARE THE BANK. There is no customer service phone number or undo button if you make a mistake.
- Pro Tip: With total freedom comes total operational responsibility!
🛡️ OpSec (Operational Security)
- Plain English: Your daily safety habits to keep scammers away from your money (using clean browser profiles, password managers, and bookmarked links).
🔐 Password Manager (Bitwarden)
- Plain English: An encrypted digital lockbox (bitwarden.com) where you store complex 30+ character random passwords (xK9#mP2$vL9!qW5#zR4) so you never have to guess or reuse passwords. You only remember ONE Master Password to open the vault.
🔑 Seed Phrase (Recovery Phrase / Secret Words)
- Plain English: A list of 12 or 24 secret random words generated when you create a crypto wallet. This is the master key to all your money.
- Pro Tip: NEVER take a screenshot, photo, or digital note of these words. Write them down with a pen on paper or metal and put them in a fireproof safe off the internet.
🎣 Phishing
- Plain English: Fake websites, Google ads, or messages designed by scammers to trick you into connecting your wallet so they can steal your funds. Always skip "Sponsored" Google search ads!
👛 Hot Wallet vs. Cold Wallet (Hardware Wallet)
- Hot Wallet (OKX Wallet): Connected to your computer browser for fast daily trading and yield execution.
- Cold Wallet (Hardware Wallet like Ledger): A physical handheld device kept disconnected from the internet. You must press a real physical button on the device to approve any outbound transfer.
2. 🌐 Blockchains, Networks & Infrastructure
⛓️ EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine)
- Plain English: The standardized computer software system that powers Ethereum and its connected networks. Any EVM-compatible chain (Sonic, Base, Arbitrum) uses the exact same wallet address format (0x...).
⛽ Gas (Gas Fees / Toll Money)
- Plain English: The tiny network fee you pay to compute and record a transaction on the blockchain. On Base or Sonic, gas costs less than 1 cent. On Ethereum Mainnet, gas can cost $20 to $50+ per trade!
🏗️ Layer 1 (L1) vs. Layer 2 (L2)
- Layer 1 (L1): The main base blockchain network (like Ethereum Mainnet or Sonic Network).
- Layer 2 (L2): A fast express lane built on top of Ethereum (like Base or Arbitrum) that processes transactions super fast for pennies and settles down to Ethereum.
- Pro Tip: In this cohort, we NEVER use Ethereum Mainnet (L1) because gas fees are too high!
🔄 RPC (Remote Procedure Call)
- Plain English: The digital bridge connecting your wallet extension to the blockchain network. OKX Wallet automatically switches RPC connections for you in the background when you move between chains.
🌉 Bridge
- Plain English: A protocol allowing separate blockchains to interact with one another, enabling the secure transfer of data and tokens between different systems (e.g., Jumper Exchange).
3. 🧰 Everyday Tools & Explorers
📊 TVL (Total Value Locked)
- Plain English: The total dollar amount of real money currently deposited inside a crypto app or network. High TVL means an app is heavily used and trusted by big capital.
🔍 Block Explorer (Basescan / SonicScan)
- Plain English: An open, public online ledger notebook recording every single transaction ever made on a blockchain. The ultimate source of truth if your wallet screen acts frozen.
📜 TxHash (Transaction Hash)
- Plain English: A unique 64-character receipt code for every single transfer made on the blockchain, used to verify payment success.
🧢 Market Cap vs. FDV (Fully Diluted Valuation)
- Market Cap: $\text{Current Price} \times \text{Coins Currently Available}$. (Shows what the project is worth today).
- FDV: $\text{Current Price} \times \text{Total Coins That Will EVER Exist}$.
- Pro Tip: Unit price is a trick! A coin costing $0.00001 is NOT "cheap" if there are trillions of coins in existence!
4. 🔀 Exchanges, Swaps & Trading Jargon
🏦 CEX (Centralized Exchange) vs. DEX (Decentralized Exchange)
- CEX (Centralized Exchange like Coinbase): A regular company website where you connect your real bank account (USD) to buy crypto (Fiat Gateway).
- DEX (Decentralized Exchange like Shadow.so): An automated app running purely on smart contracts where you trade tokens directly from your OKX Wallet without a middleman.
🔀 Meta-Aggregator (LlamaSwap / Jumper)
- Plain English: A smart engine that searches multiple coin exchanges at once to find you the cheapest route. LlamaSwap (swap.defillama.com) checks DEXs on a single chain for zero markup. Jumper Exchange (jumper.exchange) routes cross-chain swaps in 1 click.
🤖 Smart Contract
- Plain English: A self-executing computer program running directly on the blockchain ledger (a digital vending machine that executes code without human cashiers).
📉 Slippage Tolerance vs. Price Impact
- Price Impact: How much your own trade moves the price scale because your order is large relative to pool size.
- Slippage Tolerance: The maximum percentage change in price you are willing to accept before your trade automatically cancels for safety.
🔒 Token Approvals & Revoking
- Plain English: Giving a dApp permission to touch tokens inside your wallet to complete a trade. Always set approvals to "Exact Amount," and use OKX Wallet's built-in Revoke tool to lock down permissions when you finish trading!
5. 🌾 Yield, Liquidity Pools & Cash Flow
💧 Liquidity Pool (LP) & AMM
- Plain English: A digital bucket containing two tokens deposited by liquidity providers so others can trade between them. Traders swap tokens out of the bucket, and you earn a transaction fee on every trade!
🎯 CLMM / DLMM (Concentrated Liquidity Market Maker)
- Plain English: An advanced liquidity pool (like Shadow.so or Meteora) where you focus your capital within a specific, customized price range rather than spreading it across all prices from $0 to infinity. Yields are much higher per dollar deposited!
⚖️ Impermanent Loss (IL)
- Plain English: The temporary difference in value between holding two tokens in your wallet vs. placing them inside a volatile liquidity pool when price ratios shift.
🔄 The DeFi Flywheel
- Plain English: Taking the daily cash flow earned from your liquidity pools (Shadow.so) and immediately converting it into long-term blue-chip assets (Bitcoin, Ethereum, $S$) to lock away safely in cold storage.
6. 💬 Community Slang & Crypto Culture
- Airdrop: Free tokens sent directly to early wallet users as a reward for supporting a protocol.
- Alpha: Valuable or insider information regarding crypto opportunities.
- Altcoin / Alts: Any cryptocurrency that isn't Bitcoin.
- Ape / Aping In: Investing heavily into a cryptocurrency quickly, often driven by hype or excitement.
- ATH / ATL: All-Time High / All-Time Low (highest or lowest price an asset has ever reached).
- Bearish / Bullish: Pessimistic (expecting prices to fall) vs. Optimistic (expecting prices to rise).
- Diamond Hands vs. Paper Hands: Holding an asset through market crashes without selling (Diamond Hands) vs. panic-selling for a loss during a dip (Paper Hands).
- DYOR / DD: Do Your Own Research / Due Diligence (never invest based blindly on what others say).
- FUD: Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt (negative news, often exaggerated).
- GM / GN: Good Morning / Good Night (standard friendly community greetings).
- HODL: Holding an asset long-term no matter what happens (originally a typo for "hold").
- NGMI / WAGMI: Not Gonna Make It vs. We're All Gonna Make It.
- Rekt: Meaning "wrecked"—suffering a massive financial loss on a bad trade or scam.
- Rug Pull: A scam where project creators steal deposited investor funds and disappear.
- Shill: Heavily promoting a token or project to raise its price.
- Shitcoin: A cryptocurrency with weak fundamentals and no real use case.
- WAGMI: "We're All Gonna Make It" (community camaraderie slogan).
- YOLO: Investing too much money into a single risky asset.
