Really struggling with this
So in reading the Old Testament I’m having a big issue with something I think personally is not right. On a moral level. Yet it is repeated over and over because it “pleases the lord”
sacrifice, specifically animal sacrifice. It’s INSANE to me. Brutal, disgusting, horrible stewardship of creatures we are designed to be caretakers for. And it’s done for EVERYTHING. I stepped to close to a body? Alright get me that goat. I want to show thanks to god? Cut up that bull!
The biggest issue I have is that God is asking for this because of some fixation on needing the sacrifice to be “the first born”. And the BIGGEST ISSUE I have is that ideally god expects you to sacrifice your first born child. But since that’s one step too far for Israelites he says “well okay you can substitute your child, for a bull”
WHAT THE HECK DID THE BULL DO TO DESERVE THIS!??!?
(Bites into a burger while asking)
This is a super conflicting thing for me, because when you think about the characteristics of Satan, these all seem like things he would ask the masses to do, so almost as if the Israelites THOUGHT it was god when it was the great deceiver the whole time.
I’m not saying that this is true, I’m just saying that currently up to Samuel 1, and so far that’s how God is portrayed.
Really struggling with this because my mind is going “so if god told you to slaughter your dog and burn it on an alter in his name would you do it?”
The answer for me is adamantly NO WAY! And I’m not sure if that means I’m not as faithful as I should be?
Any thoughts?
