The DIKW Pyramid
People often say that data is more valuable than gold or oil. If only it was as simple as that. Data is just data. Some critics would argue otherwise, and maybe add extra layers, but I've always found that the DIKW pyramid is a very useful reminder of how data can be turned into something more valuable than gold or oil.
At the bottom of the pyramid is data - raw and unorganised facts. When this data is put into some context, it becomes information. When that information is applied or connected to experience, it becomes knowledge. And at the top of the pyramid is wisdom - using the knowledge to make good decisions.
