I remember getting to open one present the night before Christmas. I learned this when staying with family friends over one Christmas and incorporated it into my own family. I share this practice with others who then tell me they are going to observe it. Some don’t care for it at all, but I still promote this “New” tradition.
My mother once told me about the Three Dragons of English Myth and Folklore (something I am confident she totally made up). The tradition refers to three Dragons that represent the past, the present and the future. The past dragon is the original dragon with great power, wealth, wisdom and immortality, who was an advisor to Kings and Queens and leaders. The second Dragon represents the present, where unfortunately he becomes corrupt and plots against Man and leads them to destruction. This is the Dragon that was slain by Saint George (in actual English Mythology). It is also people in authority that are not worthy of it. The third Dragon represents the future, who by training, discipline and good counsel overcomes those base instincts and practices Nobility. Unlike base metals, noble metals do not corrode or rust. They cannot be corrupted. This is the promise of Nobility- that wealth and power will not corrupt them and will not corrupt a once and future leader…to not be corrupted by wealth or power, or by access to wisdom and immortality. I share this story as a part of the “invented folklore” I still like to share with others.
What are examples of traditions or folklore you could promote in this community and your own? One that is a part of your history or entirely new history to be written?
