Disputing 101: How to Challenge Negative Items the Right Way
Let’s get into the real sauce of credit repair: DISPUTES. 💥
A properly written dispute can remove:
  • Collections
  • Late payments
  • Charge-offs
  • Duplicate accounts
  • Inaccurate personal info...and more 👀
But you have to do it right.
🪜 STEP-BY-STEP: How to File a Credit Dispute
🔹 Step 1: Pull Your ReportsGet your free reports weekly at:👉 AnnualCreditReport.com
Look for:
  • Late payments you didn’t make
  • Accounts you didn’t open
  • Incorrect balances, dates, or statuses
  • Duplicates or outdated items
🔹 Step 2: Decide How to DisputeYou can dispute in 3 ways:
  1. Online (faster but less effective long-term)
  2. By mail (the preferred method for results)
  3. By phone (not recommended — no paper trail)
📌 Pro Tip: Certified Mail with return receipt is KEY when mailing disputes.
🔹 Step 3: Write a Simple, Direct Dispute LetterKeep it short and factual. Example:
“I noticed an error on my credit report. The [account name] is not mine / contains inaccurate info. Please investigate and correct or remove it under the FCRA.”
✅ Include:
  • Your name + address
  • The account name + number
  • Clear explanation
  • Copy of your ID + utility bill (to verify identity)
🔹 Step 4: Send to Each BureauAddresses for all 3 bureaus:
  • ExperianP.O. Box 4500Allen, TX 75013
  • EquifaxP.O. Box 740256Atlanta, GA 30374
  • TransUnionP.O. Box 2000Chester, PA 19016
🔹 Step 5: Wait 30–45 DaysThey must investigate and respond within 30 days.📩 You’ll get results in the mail or online.
If they verify without proof, that’s when we escalate 💼 (more on that in a future post).
