Try Reading for Repeated Words

One of the simplest Bible-study tools requires absolutely nothing fancy: choose a passage and start circling repetition.

Biblical writers repeat words, phrases, actions, contrasts, and ideas for a reason. Sometimes repetition establishes structure. Sometimes it emphasizes a theme. Sometimes it creates a comparison that is easy to miss when we read quickly.

Try this with a chapter you already know well.

On the first read, mark repeated words.

On the second, notice repeated actions: Who keeps speaking? Who listens? Who goes somewhere? Who waits? Who remembers?

Then look for repeated ideas, even when the exact vocabulary changes.

Finally, ask the useful question:

Why did the writer keep bringing me back here?

You do not have to begin every study session by finding something profound. Observation comes first. Sometimes the tiny repeated word you almost skipped is the loose thread that opens the whole passage.
