The Difference Between Being a Prophet and Being Prophetic
There are levels to the prophetic. Not everyone who moves in the prophetic is called to the office of a prophet — and not everyone called to the office has accepted its weight. Tonight we ask one honest question: Do you have the capacity to be a prophet, or do you have the capacity to move prophetically? Both are real. Both are needed. But they are not the same.
THE OFFICE OF THE PROPHET
The call chooses you — you don’t choose it.
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” — Jeremiah 1:5
Prophets were trained in community under proven voices, not in isolation.
“Now the sons of the prophets who were at Bethel came out to Elisha…” — 2 Kings 2:3
The double portion went to the one who stayed close enough to see.
”…when Elisha saw it, he cried out, ‘My father! My father!’” — 2 Kings 2:12
The standard of the office was total accuracy.
“If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the Lord does not take place or come true, that is a message the prophet has not spoken.” — Deuteronomy 18:22
The call cannot be put down.
“His word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in; indeed, I cannot.” — Jeremiah 20:9
The prophet lays foundation — they don’t decorate.
“Built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone.” — Ephesians 2:20
The fivefold prophet equips the whole body.
“So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service.” — Ephesians 4:11-12
BEING PROPHETIC — AVAILABLE TO ALL
Moses wished it. Paul commanded it.
“I wish that all the Lord’s people were prophets and that the Lord would put his Spirit on them!” — Numbers 11:29
“Follow the way of love and eagerly desire gifts of the Spirit, especially prophecy.” — 1 Corinthians 14:1
“I would like every one of you to prophesy.” — 1 Corinthians 14:5
The function of the prophetic gift is clear — it’s not primarily prediction.
“The one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening, encouraging and comfort.” — 1 Corinthians 14:3
The prophetic age is for all flesh.
“Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions.” — Joel 2:28
The prophetic gift without love is just noise.
“If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge… but do not have love, I am nothing.” — 1 Corinthians 13:2
We all prophesy in part — the gift grows.
“For we know in part and we prophesy in part.” — 1 Corinthians 13:9
KNOW YOUR MEASURE
God gave each person a precise measure — not to limit you, but to position you.
“Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.” — Romans 12:3
Stay in your lane with full confidence.
“We will not boast beyond our measure, but within the sphere which God has appointed us.” — 2 Corinthians 10:13
Know what you carry. Carry it correctly. Don’t shrink below your measure and don’t stretch beyond it. Either one is a yes from God — the question is, do you know which one you have?
