My Tournament Results!
Have you ever liked reading a blog? Yes? I'm really glad you have!
Hey, this weekend, the 14th and 15th september i partecipated in an OTB tournament, i'm making the post only now, but i have just begun school and now is the moment i've found time.
So, it was a Round Robin tournament, we were in 6 players groups and we played each other once.
In my group we all were around 1800, and i was the lowest rated player, with 1778; the highest rated was 1828 so it was a challenging tournament for me
So... i can announce the results, and then i'm gonna speak a bit about the games, there was a lot of content๐Ÿ˜‚
I arrived 2ยฐ/6 with 3.5/5 points, i gained 46 Elo and guess what? i'm now a 1N with a rating of 1824 that will became ufficial the end of the month
That was a really exciting, exhausting and funny tournament, i really enjoyed and of course it let me reach my 1800 goal!
So, the first game was against a 1807, i played my recently-studied line against the Sicilian, and i got a really nice position in the middlegame, with very strong minor pieces, but then... i played Rd6 thinking he had to move the bishop abandoning the g6 pawn, just before realizing Kg7 was possible, and then probably caused by the "minifrustration" of thinking inaccurately i sacraficed the bishop, which clearly doesn't work because he can simply attack my rook before taking my bishop
So at the end that wasn't that tragic and i kept playing of course, since i had bishop and pawn for rook and plently of play on the queenside. We proceded and in a stable position, not knowing what to do my opponent opted for a king and pawn endgame, which he considered winning, or at least his best chance; but actually that wasn't more than a draw
The second game i faced a 1798, i also played as white my new line vs the Sicilian, and we got a classical opposite-castled position and i tried to push for an attack, and then it was his turn, with a lot of pressure. with low time and probably the feeling he was taking over the game he sacraficed the knight for 2 pawns, but then he didn't avoid the queen trade, which i found strange, and i ultimately was able to convert that endgame
The third game was the next day in the morning, against a 1784 old man, which reached 2000 in the past but he has gone down a bit; i was black and he played the Torre attack, a sort of delayed Tromposky; i got in some trouble when he found the idea to give me both bishop for 2 knights, and after Bxf6 i could't play Qxf6 because of Nd7, winning an exchange and so i went for a bit unpleasent position for a human.
I found out that i could actually have taken with the QUEEN, sacraficing the Roooook, playing Qg5, because after Nxf8 i have the beautiful and spectacular and amazing and shoking and brilliant QUEEN SACRAFICE!!! for Bg3#, a so called Boden mate; i found that concept, that pattern but i could't figure out Qxe3, i just looked for Qh4-Bg3 type of things, but they didn't work.
So closed this bracket i went for an unpleasent position, but i was able to create interesting central pawn play, creating a very solid and strong center, but then, moment of blindness, i thought Qc3+ was just a check and i completely missed Qg3+ idea, and i started being like: what have i done?!
But i defended decently well, and then after a few improving and defensive moves, he played Nf4 and i sacraficed THEROOOOK! brilliant move! and the point is that my pawns are toooo strong and every endgame without queen, EVEN DOWN AN EXCHANGE are probably better for me. He avoided the trade but then he did that and i'm winning this endgame! I convert and i could then have my lunch, with a very tense game in mind looking foward the 2 final games
The fourth game i played against a 1785, a girl i played once in standard and i see basically at every tournament i play, and already at move one he offered me a draw, since he was a bit frustrated for her last game where he drew a winning endgame of B+2P vs R.
I refused that offer and then we played, still an interesting line vs Sicilian, which i prepared after lunch; we reached a position where i had bishop vs knight, but he kind of have the center, and after her second draw offer i accepted, so that i could relax before the last game, and not risk anything in that middle/endgame
The final game was certainly the most chaotic... SPOILER ALERT, if you don't want to get spoiled, don't read the next pharagrafe, jump to the following one
HAVE YOU EVER SEEN A 1778 SAVING A COMPLETELY LOST POSITION AGAINST A +50 ELO PLAYER (litterally btw, 1778-1828๐Ÿ˜‚)?
Well i'm sure not, so read this and then come back to this question
So my final opponent was a french old man, 1828 ELO, and i was black; he played d4 and London System as i knew and i was probably a little bit tired and exhausted and i played a bit inaccurately in the opening; we went for a Carlsbad structure were usually white is the one with the minority queenside attack and with the center play, but it was the opposite, i tried to build so the minority attack with A and B vs A B and C, trying to create weaknesses... but
Oh My Lord what about my king?! Nxh6 directly in my face, sacraficing a piece to open up my king completely, i was able not to get checkmated immediately, i had to sacrafice a couple of pawns, and then the GELID shower B3! deflecting my knight from the defense of e3, trying to play Re3 if i move, which would probably be unstoppable mate; so now i'm not even up a piece anymore, i'm down 2 pawns and my king is halfnaked, why didn't i resign? why would I? let's keep the pressure, he knows he's winning and he has to find a way to win.
So i relayed on the fact that if i can get to an endgame, maybe the f6 pawn falls, maybe i have center counterplay with e5-d4, and so i had some hopes; he continued trying to improve the position but i brought my rooks and the queen on defense (don't ask me what was my bishop doing), but then Qh7+ Kf7 Qh5+ Kg8 Qh7+, wait a draw?! I of course had the feeling he was gonna change, so he traded into an endgame, which, make no mistake, it's still winning for white, but i still have something, i built the center with e5 and after defending it i proceded with d4, he took, inaccuracy, allowing me 2 connected passers... I played d3, and here, probably with the fear to risk even losing, he sacraficed the bishop for that 2 pawns, but in the meantime i gained the f4 pawns, and suddenly i start realising: wait is this losing, are we sure bro, have i actually saved that garbage of a position? and while my thoughts were happening he forced a rook trade, initially i was like, oh yeah sure good move, but then, wait would you do that? you can only win or draw, with the rook there are complications and i was low on time, but i traded and that endgame was really smoothly saved by the saviour of the absolute trashest (i don't even know if it's a word๐Ÿ˜‚) of position.
So yeah that was the content i was speaking of
