Silent Letters at the End of Words
Salut! Today you're learning one of the most important rules in French pronunciation — most consonants at the end of a word are silent!
Video below
Lettre T en fin de mot — the final T is silent
t → petit, bruit, fruit, appétit, conduit, produit, gratuit
Lettre D en fin de mot — the final D is silent
d → grand, froid, retard, bord, nid, pied, rond
Lettre P en fin de mot — the final P is silent
p → trop, beaucoup, loup, champ, corps, temps, sirop, coup
Lettre X en fin de mot — the final X is silent
x → prix, choix, voix, croix, noix, heureux, deux, vieux
Lettre S en fin de mot — the final S is silent
s → temps, corps, dans, depuis, souris, Paris, fois
There are a few exceptions where the final consonant is pronounced — un fils, un bus, un ours, un os, un virus, un cactus, le tennis, un tournevis. The video covers these in detail!
