Jouer vs Faire — Sports and Activities
Salut! Today you're learning which verb to use when talking about sports and activities — and there's a simple pattern that makes it easy!
Video below
Jouer à — for ball sports, competitive games and team sports
jouer au tennis
jouer au hockey
jouer au soccer
jouer aux échecs
Faire de — for physical activities, disciplines and practices
faire du ski
faire du karaté
faire de la danse
faire de la natation
The simple rule:
if it involves a ball, a team, or a board game, it's usually jouer à.
If it's a physical discipline or practice, it's usually faire de.
When in doubt, faire de is the safer choice!
