Here's a bit about the book. A.J. Smitherman was more than a newspaper publisher. He was a strategist, a truth-teller, and a central figure in the rise of Black Wall Street in Greenwood, Tulsa.
Through original research, historical records, and lived legacy, this book examines how oil wealth, media power, and Black entrepreneurship converged—and how those systems were violently disrupted in 1921.
Written by Smitherman’s great-granddaughter, this work restores historical context often omitted from mainstream narratives and explores the lasting impact of economic sabotage, resilience, and generational memory.
This is not only a biography. It is a corrective record. A cultural document. And a call to remember what was built—and why it mattered.
