Charleston WV - An elderly Charleston woman has become something of a local legend for her unusual choice of self-defense: a trusty slingshot she carries everywhere. Neighbors say that Rosalyn Whitman, 80, is rarely seen without it tucked neatly into her purse, alongside peppermints and church bulletins.
“She doesn’t need pepper spray—she’s got perfect aim with a river rock,” one amused bystander noted. Rumor has it that Rose once scared off a would-be purse snatcher with a single warning shot that pinged a stop sign two blocks away.
The Charleston woman insists the slingshot is all about “preparedness and nostalgia.” “Why waste money on fancy gadgets?” she said. “This worked on squirrels, and it’ll work on hooligans too!”
Local teens reportedly steer clear of her porch, fearing a surprise marble barrage. “She’s basically the Wyatt Earp of Charleston,” one remarked. "It's generally best to try and avoid her."
