Be willing.
It really changed things for me when someone said, I didn't have to WANT to quit, to start down the road to Recovery. All I had to do, she said, "be WILLING to try something different. My life was not working; and anything I had tried before didn't change that. So, that's all I did. I became willing to try something different, listen to suggestions, find other ways to cope. Removing the substance was first, no question about it. I drank no matter the circumstances, but when that was gone, I didn't know how to cope, with anything, from the minute to the earth-shattering. I was flabbergasted by the many, many ways people cope with such difficult situations (life) without a drink! As soon as I was willing to admit my way wasn't working; opportunities for change just exploded! Those other ways, options, possibilities were always there; I just wasn't willing to look.
