Do you ever feel like your goals seem impossible to accomplish?
Kaizen. A Japanese philosophy of continuous improvement through small, incremental steps.
James Clear's Atomic Habits also teaches this - the art of breaking down habits into bite-sized actions.
I’ve successfully used this method to tackle my most die-hard habits...and from there - birth newly desired habit.
(I even use this technique to train dogs! 🐕 Believe it or not.)
Think of it as starting from the end goal and reverse engineering it down to the tiniest possible step that moves you forward.
Example: GOAL → Play My Guitar 🎸
- Find my guitar.
- Open the case.
- Pick up the guitar.
- Put my hands on it.
- Strum.
Simple, right? Let’s break it down further…
Step 1: FIND MY GUITAR
- Know where it is.
- Go to where it is.
- See where it is.
The smallest actionable step is just to THINK about where the guitar is - with mindfulness. Doable?
A 3-Week Framework:
- Week 1: Spend just a moment each day thinking about where the guitar is. Do nothing else unless inspired to.
- Week 2: Think about your guitar and see it each day. Do nothing else unless inspired to.
- Week 3: Think, see, and walk over to your guitar each day. What happens when you stand in front of your guitar?
You get the idea.
Keep going until inspiration hits. ✨
Sometimes we need to re-train and practice this inspirational muse, just like every other muscle we use. 💪
⚡️Challenge: What’s a creative goal you’ve been putting off? Can you break it down to its smallest possible action?
