Should I pursue my interest in Java or stick with my current path?

I graduated in 2025 and joined a company in early 2026. Recently, I was assigned to a project involving an SAP ERP system. While I’m willing to learn and work with it, I don’t see myself pursuing SAP as a long-term career.

My main area of interest is Java. I wouldn’t say I’m an expert in Java yet, but I do have a decent foundation and, more importantly, I genuinely enjoy learning and working with it. I’ve been learning Java, SQL, JDBC, Spring, Spring Boot, and related backend concepts, and I want to build my career around Java rather than continue in a technology that I don’t see myself pursuing long term.

Recently, I’ve been wondering whether it’s worth trying to transition from SAP to Java and pursue something I’m genuinely interested in, or whether I should simply continue with the path I’ve already been given.

The problem is that I’m not completely sure what specific role I want to target. I know that I’m interested in Java, but I don’t yet know whether I should aim for a Java Backend Developer, Full-Stack Developer, or some other Java-related role.

So I want to understand what I should do from this point onward — what skills I should focus on, what projects I should build, how strong my Java knowledge needs to be, what kind of role would suit me, and how I can eventually move from my current project into a Java-based role.

Can someone help me figure out what I should do from here and how I can transition into a Java-based role? I’d especially appreciate advice from people who have been in a similar situation or have experience in Java development.

Is pursuing this transition actually worth it, or would it be better to stick with the path I’m currently on?
