Claude's most powerful model went dark 3 days after launch.
On June 12, the US government issued an export control directive to suspend access to Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5. The order targeted foreign nationals, so Anthropic disabled both models for everyone to stay compliant.
The reason given was national security. The government believes it found a way around Fable 5's safety guardrails. Anthropic is complying but disagrees. It says the technique only surfaced minor, already known flaws that other models can find too, and that it is working to restore access.
As of June 15, both models are still offline. No return date yet.
Only Fable 5 and Mythos 5 are affected. Opus 4.8, Sonnet, and Haiku all work normally. If you were not using Fable 5, nothing about your day changes.
But the lesson is bigger than one model. If your business runs on a single tool, you do not have a workflow. You have a single point of failure.
