Is there a free way to track link clicks & phone number clicks on a website that's reliable?

I've been using Google Analytics to track these clicks on my clients' sites but it doesn't seem to be very accurate.

I can't figure out if that's because I don't have it set up right or if that's because it's just not a reliable way to track link clicks & phone number clicks (maybe bot traffic has something to do with that).

Does anyone know of a reliable way to track these clicks for free?

If Google Analytics is the answer, does anyone have tips for troubleshooting why the numbers are so "off" on my clients' websites?

I'm open to paying for a software (like CallRail) if that's really the only reliable way to track phone calls from SEO.
