Nine Months Sober: The Courage to Choose Life One Day at a Time
Nine Months Sober: What Actually Changes?
Many people think recovery is about stopping alcohol or drugs.
In my work with people recovering from addiction, I've noticed something different:
The real challenge begins after the substance is gone.
The question then becomes:
"What am I living for now?"
One of the themes I explore in the Finding Purpose Method is that lasting recovery often requires more than abstinence—it requires meaning, direction, and a reason to get up in the morning.
Recently, I reflected on the journey of one of my clients reaching nine months sober and the daily courage it takes to choose life one day at a time.
One insight stood out:
Recovery becomes more sustainable when a person moves from asking
"How do I stop using?" to "What kind of life am I trying to build?"
I'd be interested to hear from others:
What has been the biggest change you've noticed after several months of sobriety?
For anyone interested, I wrote a longer reflection below.
