Hey everyone! Welcome to our Theory Thursday! We're diving into the absolute smallest building block of all music on the guitar.
🤯 Concept: The Half Step (or Semitone)
Every single note, chord, and melody you love is just a combination of small, consistent steps. On the guitar, this step has a physical place:
- A Half Step is the distance from one fret to the very next fret.
It's that simple! If you move up one fret, you've gone up a half step. If you move down one fret, you've gone down a half step.
📏 Why This Matters
This is how music is measured!
- A Whole Step is two half steps, or the distance of two frets.
Understanding these two steps (Half and Whole) is the secret key to building scales and chords in the future.
🎯 Quick Challenge!
- Pick any note on the low E string (like the 5th fret, an A note).
- Play it, and then play the fret right next to it (the 6th fret).
- Congrats! 🎉 You just played a half step interval!
If you can find one fret, you can find a half step. If you can find two frets, you can find a whole step. You've got the map to all music right under your fingers!
