I met Malcolm in our senior year of college. He was a popular guy, in a fraternity, the whole nine. I wondered why someone like that would want to be with me. I’m not ugly by any means, I’m thick or as guys have told me, a snickers away from being fat thick. I’m not someone a popular guy would notice, at least I didn’t think so. We had one class together. I was studying to be an engineer and he was studying cyber security. I was shocked the day he came and spoke to me, asking about the assignment. “Do you need help with the assignment?” I asked, assuming that was the only reason he crossed my path. “Naw. I was thinking we could work on it together. My name is Malcolm.” He licked his lips, or was that just in my imagination? “My name is Mia. We can work on it together if you want to.” My voice cracking as I answered. “Ok meet me in the library later.” Malcolm said while one of his boys pulled him away. I could see him looking back. I figured it was some type of prank or a dare. I wasn’t going to become the laughing stock of the campus. The next week in class Malcolm sat next to me, “You didn’t show up to the library last week.” “I’m sorry I fell asleep. I don’t have a way to contact you so…” Before I could finish the sentence he wrote his number on my notebook. Who does that? I was still thinking this was a joke or a prank. I side eyed him and went back to what the professor was saying. He did also. After class he approached me again. “I’m sorry. Let me doing this correctly. Can I take you out Mia?” I nodded. “Yes you can.” I looked around and didn’t see his boys but that didn’t mean they weren’t there filming. “You’re in Bradmore Hall? What room?” Malcolm asked. “Yes. I’m in room 226.” “So I’ll pick you up Saturday at seven. See you then.” He skipped off. I watched him go, shaking it off. I figured I should be the one skipping. Malcolm was fine. His skin is a little darker than caramel, a Caesar haircut. He was kind of muscular, not big but muscular enough to let you know he worked out. His 6’2” frame was exceptional. The rest of the week he’s all I could think of. Saturday came around and I had nothing to wear. I turned to Catherine.
