Hi, I'm Teri, and I'm feeling very lost regarding Medicare and Social Security. I will turn 65 in November 2026. I became a stay-at-home mom and housewife in 1999, so I have not had employer-sponsored health insurance since then. Instead, I have always been covered by my husband's Blue Cross Blue Shield FEP insurance. My husband, however, had to retire early (October 2020, when he was 2 months shy of turning 60) due to health reasons. Since 2023, he has been in a nursing home and just recently was put on hospice care (His doctor expects that he has a few months to live). Getting him qualified for Medicaid to cover his nursing home residency was too overwhelming for me to do on my own, so I hired an attorney who specialized in this. It was expensive but a good move since I didn't know what I was doing. For now, I live off of a fixed income -- My husband's small pension from his federal government job, and from SSDI that he receives. Once my husband passes on, I will go back to work or run a home business to support myself. The only other pertinent information I can think of is that I had cancer surgery in December 2025 and will continue with visits to an oncologist every 6 months for 5 years (January 2031). The only prescription I take is daily thyroid medication. I have not filed for Social Security (And I don't know what options for Social Security I have since I haven't been employed for so long), but I will worry about that after I figure out Medicare. My question is -- My Medicare enrollment period is coming up quickly. If I call Chapter, do I just ramble on and on with information as I have above? I'm an intelligent, college-educated woman, but this stuff is really hard for me. I'm feeling overwhelmed and don't want to choose the wrong Medicare option.
