My First Microgreens Crop Was… Mold.
When I was just getting started, I dove in with excitement and planted a mix of fast-growers: radish, kale, and mustard. I had read you needed to keep the seeds “dark and humid” for the first few days. So, naturally, I put my trays in my cold, damp basement. I figured I was doing everything right. After four days, there were no sprouts. Just… nothing. I started to panic — bad seeds? Wrong method? Then I saw it. Growth! But not microgreens… it was molding a thick, fluffy blanket across every tray. Turns out my basement was too cold, too wet, and I had overwatered. The perfect storm for spores, not sprouts. Needless to say, I tossed the whole “crop,” learned a ton, and now grow in a clean, controlled space. No more moldy experiments in the dungeon. 👉 What about you? What’s your funniest or most memorable moment from your early microgreens journey? Share it below let’s laugh and learn together 👇

Same here, trays full of mold. I finally got a humidity meter and discovered my space was too hot and humid. So now I'm ordering a humidifier and a fan. I'm committed to making this work. If for any reason I decide to not peruse this line of business, I can switch it to personal use and can also grow “recreational grass”😉
Tray Identification
How do you identify your trays? The current system I use is to label them with a removable sticker with the crop and expected harvest date.

Broccoli Update
After 3 days in germination this is what I get😭 Only a very few germinated, Im thinking the problem here are the seeds.

Yes, I reduced a little the amount of water to see if I was over watering. But figure I have bad seed, next day most seed started to turn green

@Jeconias Fernandes I'm still doing testing with those seed, I'm doing different stuff to see if anything works

Here’s what I’ve got growing right now in the lab (aka my shelf 😄): ✨ Alfalfa – Looking great overall! I had to remove a few patches where seeds weren’t germinating 😬. I got ahead of it before any mold showed up — crisis averted! 💪 🌿 Fenugreek – Crushing it! Super happy with how this one is growing. It’s got that “I’m thriving” energy 😎. 🌻 Sunflower – I’m running two tests here: - One with 2 days blackout - One that went straight to lightAnd guess what? Both are growing beautifully! Can’t wait to compare the results 🌞🌑 🌱 Cilantro – Just planted today! First time growing this one, so we’ll see what magic happens 🧙‍♂️✨ Ps: Im just a newbie here, if by any chance you notice something that looks wrong let me know, I learn by making mistakes.

@Mark Parker thanks, I did pre soaked for 2 hours. I also have issues with mold so I didn't want to soak them too much. While germination I would check them twice a day as soon as I saw a little sign of mold I remove those seeds (just a few since then). I'm playing around with different growing medium to see what works for me

@Mark Parker I use coco coir with some perlite and worm something (not sure of the name in English), coco by itself doesn't work for me. I'm working on getting the perfect recipe that works for me
Broccoli Trials & Mold Woes 🥦😭
I’ve been testing broccoli microgreens lately—since it’s one of my favorites, I was super excited to get it right. But every round so far has ended in... mold. Here’s the breakdown: Test 1: Total rookie move—I used way too many seeds. Mold city. Test 2: I dialed back the seeds, but probably overwatered. Mold again. Test 3: I moved my setup from my room to the living room for better airflow. I was hopeful —about 30% germinated by day 4—but the rest? Moldy. Test 4: I was feeling confident with this one... and boom, mold on day one 😅 I should have taken photos, but I suspect the trays are the issue. I’m currently using cheap, deep trays and not filling them all the way up, which might be causing moisture buildup. I’ve already ordered Bootstrap Farmer trays, so fingers crossed those help. I'm using coco coir, and I noticed after watering, the top stays moist, but the bottom stays dry. Is that normal? 🤷🏽‍♀️ For sanitation, I do mist with heavily diluted hydrogen peroxide before covering, and I only water once. I’m also wondering if the weight I’m using might be too heavy—maybe it’s time to try with less pressure. Anyway, just sharing the journey—failures and all! Learning one seed at a time 🌱
