Deep Tissue
What is your relationship to deep tissue? How do you define it? Is it something you use in your practice?

For me I no longer do a Deep Tissue Massage. I don't find it to be helpful for my clients. I don't ask my clients about the level of pressure, I feel it's my professional responsibility to know that. When it comes to the term Deep Tissue massage I define it by the mindset behind it that more pressure produces the results. Going up to people tolerance threshold because its good. I do find using more in targeted ways but it's never the whole session. Most of my work has been about listening to the tissue. I find that the tissue often says no before it becomes to much for the person. That slow and sustained pressures on the lighter and medium side have been the most effective for my clients.
Making some changes
So I'm being brave and "eating the elephant" 🐘 of building out material in the classroom. I'm starting to build out the outline of what will be available and will provide content as I complete it. Rather than wait until it's perfect though, you'll get to see it as it's getting done. I'll start by publishing what I have now and will just keep things public even while I'm working on it. Please be patient and understand that I'm doing all this on top of working full time at a spa, running my own practice, building and managing marketing and still making time to be a mom to my 3 little girls. I'm sure there are people out there who can do it better but we're here to build a community, not paying for perfection. hope you guys like it and make suggestions!

Sounds Dope Can't wait to see it! Curious what's the 1st course going to be?
Congested Vs Disconnected
Since I use different versions of bodywork finding out when to use one vs when to use another has been something I've been working to differentiate. On my journey I've seen two different general ways people show up. Congested - tiredness, lethargic, foggy, sore. There flow in the body is slow and stuck. Then there is Disconnected- Numb, nerve entrapment, an error code in the body is going off. It's a communication issue. I use something closer to a regular massage with congested and myofascial release for disconnected. I've found that using myofascial release for congested doesn't get as good of results and using regular massage for disconnected either doesn't anything or makes the problem worse. It's finding how one thing can not work at all or make things worse in one context and in another it does magic that nothing else can touch. Has anyone else found things in their work that fallows this narrative?

@Jack Pelkey Yea for sure. Even when I do go "deep tissue" it's not the same I find that I can hear the tissue much more then when I first started. Yea the disconnected group is difficult one to navigate. I use a lot of my knowledge of trauma, addiction, and the nervous system with them. They also have to be ready i.e. in enough pain. I would say the disconnected group takes a lot more knowledge to help them through the process because they literally can feel and to bring the feeling back takes time and care because they've usually disconnected for a reason and the body has changed because of it. It can very much feel like disarming a bomb and rocking a baby till they stop crying at the same time.
Oil or lotion?
If you use a lubricant for your massage/bodywork which do you prefer? And leave a comment below about what your go-to is! I’ll leave mine!

I make a custom blend. Mixing coconut oil, jojoba oil, and bee's wax. It creates what is in essence a salve.

It doesn't separate or clump it's really smooth. Definitely wouldn't work in a dispenser. I use a small cup. I use very little product.
So what exactly is it that you do?
If you've entered into the realm of massage and bodywork, you have probably realized by now that there are many different styles and techniques you can choose from, learn about and focus in. Each one has uniques and distinct advantages and can help in a variety of circumstances. No doubt when you tell people what you do and you say something other than "Massage" or "I'm a bodywork professional" you get a variation of responses that can be summed up with 'so what exactly do you do?'. And while they might not completely understand if you explain it to them I have have good news for you: WE DO!! This community right here is built for people just like you who love to learn and want their knowledge and skills to be appreciated. So let's build something great together and support each other in our differences. Go team!

I have three distinct styles that I move between. Myofascial release (John Barnes Lineage), Myofascial release (Tom Myers Lineage), Neuromuscular, and Lymphatic Drainage. If find bouncing between styles allows me to show up for where a person is at. If they have nerve entrapment I use one style. If their groggy and over it then I use another. Feeling congested switch. Getting to the point of mastering multiple styles is deeply rewarding and even more reward is knowing when each one is called for.
