Replacing your 9-5
This is everyone’s ideal situation, because having your own business allows you to make your own money. You no longer need to drain your time or energy at a company that you could care less about. Scott in your introduction, and one of the main reason you started this group, you mentioned how you tried to jump head first into your own business, but it didn’t quite work as planned… Could you tell your story, where you think you went wrong, what you learned, and honestly this is the most important question… after failing, how did you forgive yourself, how long did it take for you to be ready to try again. I ask that question because I feel most people don’t talk about the mental and emotional bandwidth that happens when you run a business.

@Scott Gray thank you for sharing your story! I can relate to a lot of what you said, hopefully I can learn from some of your failures.

I am currently a mechanic at a dealership, which I have learned is not the career I want to be in. I believe in working to learn before you work to earn, that’s why I became a mechanic, simply because I knew nothing about cars, but I knew it would be a valuable skill to have. I was a real estate agent before that, for 4 years. I only sold two houses. I could go on a 45 min lecture on how real estate is a trap meant for realtors to fail. Like mechanics, I knew nothing about selling or real estate, but I knew it would be a valuable skill to have. All my life I’ve always known that I was going to figure out how to become “free” in this world. Every time I brainstorm, I always land on business that I could create and manage that would make my life more “free” than being tied to a job that takes almost everything from you. 10 hour days just to pay the bills and feel like you aren’t drowning. I have failed many times, and I will continue to fail for the rest of my life. That sounds scary, but it’s not. It’s not scary because life isn’t binary, you cannot truly fail in life. Believing that there are no right or wrong answers, and you are damned if you do and damned if you don’t… is freeing to me. I have only just discovered this perspective of life and that’s when I started to look into woodworking. Not intentionally, I had stumbled across the idea of making money building and selling wood planters. Which then lead me to think of the endless possibilities that I can provide for my family and my community with the skill of woodworking and carpentry. My product: 2-4 cucumber plant raised planter with built in trellis. Instead of trying to sell a generic planter or raised bed, I found an easy target audience. I am not a seasoned gardener, but I planted cucumbers last year and they did amazing. By selling a niche product with quality craftsmanship, I believe I can easily sell enough to support my first step into my learning of woodworking/carpentry.
Another Mistake to Avoid
Just like my idea to save a couple of bucks on my web domain, I had the bright idea to go shop all the bonus offers for opening bank accounts at various banks. I found one that had a $450 bonus, so I opened that account to use as my business account. (yes, I'll need to wait 90 days to get my money, but free money is free money.) How is this a mistake? Well it isn't in and of itself. The idea is fine. What is tough is transferring funds between that account and my personal account ("paying myself"). When I transfer funds from account to account WITH THE SAME INSTITUTION, the money moves instantly and I can use it as needed. But now that I have a new account at a DIFFERENT bank, the transfer is taking several days, and the funds are just "gone" - not available for use in either account until the transaction is completed. Thankfully, this hasn't caused me too many real problems (overdrafts, NSF, etc), but it certainly could. So in my attempt to get a few extra bucks for free, I have created a drag on funds available. Sure, I could learn to live with it and just account for the extra time, but when things move at the speed of business, I want to be ready to act immediately. Takeaway: Consider how one decision can impact other areas of your life and your business. Chasing the shiny object can cause otherwise well-oiled processes in your business to start rusting. Just be careful. Me? I'll likely end up closing this account and opening a separate one at my current bank - you know, AFTER they pay me my $450. 8^P

I have heard of that strategy, and have used it for credit cards… open the account spend like normal, free money after a month or 2. Never once crossed my mind about moving funds between banks. You just saved me from running into that same trap, thank you!

When you overcome resistance, you absorb it’s power. The greater the resistance the greater the power.
