Huge accomplishment in revision!
Tonight I cut over 10,000 words from my manuscript and moved a gigantic cluster of scenes to their proper place. Though I'll be editing what I moved to just about smithereens, I feel like this has been a glorious end to my day.

Writers: “I deleted 10,000 words today.” Non-writers: “Oh no!” Writers: “No, no… this is the happiest I’ve been in weeks.” 😄
When Did Authors Become Full-Time Marketers?
Curious if anyone else has wrestled with this: I came from a B2B marketing background, so I assumed book marketing would feel somewhat familiar. Instead, I’ve found author marketing to be surprisingly expensive, fragmented, and often exhausting. At times, it feels like writers can spend more energy trying to become marketers, platform builders, video creators, ad managers, SEO specialists, and social media personalities than actually writing books. Some days I honestly think: “What if I just focused on writing better books instead?” 😄 I’d love to hear how others are balancing the business side with the creative side without burning themselves out.

Checking in!
For this morning, I am doing what I hope to be the last edits on Baker Street, a new Max Boucher series, and what I hope will re-ignite it, as it has been a while since I released a book in that one. I'm also working on ideas for new covers for the first two books - all that before tackling edits for other people. As we head toward the weekend (for some of you, I don't know what those are) what are you working on?

This weekend I’m working on upgrades to my author website — organizing books, improving navigation, and trying to make everything a little more reader friendly. I’ve discovered that author websites are a lot like writing projects: every time you think you’re finished, you suddenly have “just one more thing” you want to improve. 😄 Hoping to balance productive work with at least a little actual reading and relaxation along the way.

Thank you for offering this, Stacey. Metadata is one of those areas that many writers underestimate at first, only to later realize how much it affects discoverability and long-term visibility. I’m especially interested in hearing your perspective on balancing optimization with authenticity — helping books become more discoverable without making them all sound mechanically similar in the marketplace. Looking forward to attending and learning from the discussion.

Hello everyone! I’m John, and I’m glad to join the group. I’ve been working primarily in the indie/self-publishing space across a mix of nonfiction, satire, speculative fiction, and humor projects. Like many authors, I’ve gradually discovered that writing the book and publishing the book are almost two entirely different skill sets. Right now I’m continuing to build and organize a growing catalog while also trying to improve the systems around it — formatting workflows, metadata consistency, launches, author websites, reader communication, and all the moving pieces that somehow appear after typing “The End.” 😄 The part of publishing that probably feels most overwhelming to me is balancing visibility with sustainability. There are endless marketing tactics available today, and sometimes the challenge is figuring out which efforts actually build a long-term readership versus simply creating more noise. I’m looking forward to learning from everyone here and hearing how other authors are navigating the current publishing landscape.
