The Journey: Jackson, who didn't even own a car, bought a used Winton convertible with no windshield (8:47-9:09). He hired a bicycle mechanic to accompany him since he didn't know how to repair an automobile (10:42-10:56). Challenges: There were no roads at the time, so they drove on horse trails and through fields (11:27-11:34). They blew their only spare tire 15 miles out of San Francisco (11:07-11:24). Celebrity Status: As they traveled, Jackson became a celebrity, with towns gathering to see the automobile pass through (11:47-12:00). He was reportedly going nine miles per hour, which was an incredible speed to people who had never seen a car (12:10-12:24). Competitors: Other automobile companies, like Packard and Oldsmobile, tried to beat him to gain publicity, but they failed due to various mechanical issues and difficult routes (12:55-14:04). The Dog: Somewhere in Idaho, they picked up a pit bull (14:07). Outcome: The trip took 63 days and cost Jackson $8,000, but the person who made the bet welched, so Jackson never collected his winnings (14:20-14:32). Ken Burns even made a documentary about it called "Horatio's Drive America's first road trip" (21:07-21:12)
