The Ideal Candidate is a Myth. Growth is What Matters.
As recruiters and hiring managers, we often start with a wishlist, a long list of skills and traits we think we need. But in reality? We hire people, not checklists. - We choose those who show potential. - Who are open to learning. - Who may not know it all yet, but are ready to grow with us. Because the best hires aren’t always the ones who tick every box. They’re the ones who grow into the role (and often beyond it). So if you’re job hunting and feel “not qualified enough,” don’t count yourself out. Your mindset might be your biggest strength. Here’s what you can do: 1. Show your growth mindset >> Share how you’ve learned new tools, adapted quickly, or taken initiative. 2. Highlight transferable skills >> Even if your experience isn’t an exact match, is it similar? Show that. 3. Align with values >> Cultural fit and genuine interest often matter more than perfection. 4. Be honest, but confident >> It’s okay to say “I’m still learning…”, as long as you follow with action. 5. Apply even if you’re 70–80% a match >> You don’t need to be perfect. You need to be ready. What’s one small thing you can do this week to show you’re ready, not perfect?

Growth mindset 😤
The tech industry is changing at a lightning pace. Let me show you how I stay relevant.
What AI tools are you using on a day-to-day basis to help you either upskill or learn about new technologies? Here is my list: Cursor - This is an AI Code Editor or IDE and right now it is my go to IDE over VSCODE. Cluade AI - This is a conversational AI website, similar to Chatgpt. I find their responses to be more valuable and less generic compared to ChatGPT. Manus AI - This tool acts like an AI agent and helps turn ideas into action right away. It acts as your personal assistant. SupBase - It is the Postgres development platform. Its a combination of open-source tools that helps you to set up and connect a database to an application in minutes.

I also use Claude a lot. I'm a fan of the artifact preview window and artifact versioning! I think I've figured out a pretty good prompting system for vibe coding with Claude, too. When it comes to IDEs, I'll admit I don't vibe code in my IDE too much and only sometimes use GH copilot in VSC. I tried out Cursor last summer, and I'm itching to try out Windsurf. The agent capabilities are intriguing. Here's a good article comparing the two AI IDEs. https://www.indiehackers.com/post/tech/windsurf-vs-cursor-how-to-pick-the-best-ai-code-editor-xrZbJml4GGNsFHQoQRaZ Honestly, the main reason I've hesitated in jumping back in to try an AI IDE is because I heavily use key bindings and snippets (some are custom), and they conflict with the AI IDEs' key bindings for the AI features. Which is only mildly annoying, but the friction is a turn-off nonetheless. Anyone else have this problem? And that's why I'm excited to try AI from the command line with Gemini CLI! Everybody says Claude Code is better. But Claude Code is $200/mo and Gemini CLI is free 💀

Hi everyone, I’m Uday Paul! I’m a Computer Science student from India, currently in my final year. I’ve just started my journey into software development and I’m focusing on building strong foundations first starting with C programming, problem-solving, and understanding core computer science concepts. My goal is to grow step-by-step into full-stack development (especially with FastAPI and Python), while also preparing for placements and real-world projects. I joined this community to learn consistently, stay motivated, and grow with fellow learners.Excited to be here and looking forward to learning with all of you!

How to Nail the " Tell me About Yourself" Question
🎤 “Tell me about yourself.” This is the most important question in any interview—it sets the tone and pace for everything that follows. Here’s how to answer it effectively: 1️⃣ Start with a quick overview of your core experience that directly aligns with the role. 2️⃣ Highlight your most relevant accomplishments and skills. 3️⃣ End with why you’re excited about this opportunity and how you can bring value to the team. 💡 My Advice: Keep it focused and concise—aim for 1-2 minutes. Think of this as your elevator pitch, where you deliver your key points confidently without rambling. 🔥 Pro Tip: Tailor your answer for each interview. Research the company and role beforehand so you can connect your experience to their specific needs. Mentioning details like their goals or values shows you’ve done your homework. What’s your strategy for answering this question? Have you ever nailed it or struggled with it? Share your tips and experiences below! 💬

Tailoring for each interview is great advice! I review, tailor, and practice this question before every interview because I tried to tailor it on the spot and it was as messy as you'd think it'd be

Hi everyone! 👋 My name is Derek. Born and raised in Los Angeles, now living in Silicon Valley. 🌉 I graduated from the University of California Santa Cruz with a BA in Game Design 🎮 in 2021, and used my skills to start a freelance web design business in 2022. 💼 Last year, I got sick of running a business by myself and made it my goal to transition to an individual contributor role as a developer. 🧑‍💻 I've learned a lot this past year, and found passion in exploring LLM development, edtech, automation workflows, and productivity hacking. I even launched an edtech genAI product, Veida AI. 🧠 My current bottleneck in my job hunt is passing technical interviews. They're way harder than I thought they'd be! 😅 So I've been grinding LeetCode while volunteering as a WIX developer for SOMOS.tech and doing web dev + IT automations for the Bay Area Dragon Boat Foundation. I'm excited to be here and meet the community! I’d love to connect on LinkedIn! linkedin.com/in/derekgomez I also just created my first GitHub profile readme and would love some feedback! github.com/GomezDerek
