Over the past 30 years, Europe’s forests have expanded by more than 14 million hectares — a remarkable rebound for one of the world’s most important carbon sinks. ✨ Why this matters: + Climate ally – forests store vast amounts of carbon and are critical in fighting global warming. + Biodiversity boost – healthy, diverse forests provide habitats for countless species. + Global example – Europe shows that with science, policy, and cooperation, ecosystems can recover. Austria, where nearly half the country is covered by forests, is celebrating 150 years of forest science education at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU). Experts highlight that today’s challenge is adapting forests to climate change: reducing monocultures like spruce and promoting diverse, resilient mixed forests.
