There's a quiet ministry in a morning walk. Every wave to a passing car, every hello to a neighbor, is a small offering of presence, and this morning it showed me something I hadn't fully seen. My wife and I weren't just walking. We were the thread that pulled three separate conversations into one, the connective tissue between people who might have simply passed each other by. That's what unity actually looks like in practice. It isn't a grand gesture. It's showing up open, present, and willing to be the space where connection happens through you. Gratitude found me easily this morning, because I got to witness something sacred hiding in plain sight: we don't have to search for our purpose in big moments. We spend our days shifting shape. The version of you that shows up for your neighbor is not quite the version your colleague sees. The one your friends know softens or sharpens for your family, depending on the room. Each of these is a costume, stitched together over years to keep you safe, to keep you liked, to keep the peace. But strip away the audience and something else remains. Alone with your thoughts, with no one left to perform for, there is a quieter presence waiting. That one has been there the whole time, watching the costumes come and go. Spiritual growth is not about finding a new mask that fits better. Take it out in the rain sometimes. It has vast, invisible wings that gather dirt and need rinsing. When it tries to kill you that is because you've forgotten to let it look into someone's eyes for longer than a minute. It needs that the way a bee needs nectar in the early morning dew. Every so often, take it on a journey. Let it read long, hard books and let it stare into the depths of the sea. Yes, you can give it chips and whiskey, but from time to time let it kneel in a place that is holy like the simple cathedral of the willows. All it wants is to live, to keep becoming. Nourish it, and it puts down roots, it opens. But starve it, and the mind, the flesh is empty; the world breaks down; symphonies go unwritten; the rockets fall; the children die in flames. Listen. It is not too late to wake it. Say the names of the wild, the forgotten things: bluebird, red wolf, robin; violet, child, clover. You cannot save the world but you can open the window for the trapped wren in the cellar. Read a book to a blind man, to your father. Tell a child you do believe her anger. Service isn't something you do from a place of lack, hoping to earn worth by giving it away. Real service flows through you once you've done the interior work: sat with your own shadow, found your own peace, and returned with a lantern instead of empty hands. When you help from that place, unity stops being a concept. You feel it. You see your own healing mirrored in someone else's, and something in both of you softens.
