Most of us listen just long enough to plan what we’ll say next. I’ve caught myself doing it countless times, already forming my response while the other person is still talking. But try pausing, taking a breath, and reflecting back what you heard before jumping in with your own thoughts. It does something subtle but powerful. It slows everything down and creates space for actual understanding. You don’t have to agree with someone to make them feel heard. You just have to show that you genuinely listened. And that’s where real connection, and influence, actually starts.
