My Book The Dead Tongue Nobody has ever been accurate about Marlowe Rooke. She has been called clever, and difficult, and a waste, usually by somebody holding a clipboard. She has settled two hundred of the dead in the walls of Threadneedle for forty dollars an hour, cash, no certificate number. She is the best unlicensed bone-singer in the Fen and nobody has ever written that down. Then a letter comes through the door in an envelope thick enough to be a threat. A full ride to the Vesper Conservatory of Applied Thanatology, a school built out of the dead on an island across the water. A four-page application she never filled in. A ninety-dollar fee somebody else already paid. She did not apply. At Vesper they teach six Registers, and they teach that the sixth one is not taught at all. It belongs to a professor who has not spoken aloud since 1846 — who returns her essays with four hundred words in the margins twice a week, in a hand that arrives in her head instead of her ears, and who is the first person in her life to be exactly, ruthlessly accurate about her mind. She should be frightened of him. She is. That turns out not to be the opposite of wanting him. There is a chamber on sublevel three that was welded shut in 1986. A green door on the west run that appears and goes. A boy with a green pen who has eleven weeks left and does not know it. Marlowe is very good at three things, and the third one is keeping a record. So she rules four columns in a cheap notebook. Date. What he did. Where. What happened in the forty-eight hours before. She thinks she is keeping a record of a man's feelings. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0HG6JT73D
