I have still been pondering Sunday’s Mindset Matter with Ty. The lesson really struck a chord with me. Is anyone else still thinking about it?? “Stop waiting for someone to invite you to their table. Build your own table. Then decide who you want sitting there with you.” I understood, but honestly, I just could not piece mine together. I have not felt that warm, familiar experience of sitting around a table in a couple of years. I sat at my Dear Sweet Granny's table for forty-eight years, and her presence made her table my home. So when I heard, “Build your own table,” my heart just resisted. Then we were asked to write down what people ask us, and I drew another blank. I am never really asked anything. People come to me with their problems, and I solve them. When Ty said that was actually my answer, I had to step into my creative side, and stop being so literal. When I did, my car came immediately to mind!! I bought my first car thirty-three years ago, and I have been riding every day since. It takes me where I need or want to go. I hold the keys. I am the driver. I choose my destination, the routes I take, when to turn, keep going, or leave a path that no longer leads where I want to be. I decide who gets in, because even if I am the only one in the car, there might be no room. I choose who rides for a few miles, a season, or hopefully many roads ahead. And sometimes, I have drop a passenger. Not everyone can go where I go. I get to choose who I trust to be in my space, who understands and values pure silence, who knows not to touch anything, and who can respect where I am headed even if they would not take the same path. I require someone who will enjoy the scenery, ride through traffic, handle a few wrong turns, and remember that this is my journey to steer. I have never allowed myself to stand on the side of the road, waiting for someone to notice, waiting for someone to stop, or waiting to be rescued. So maybe I’m not building a table. I am climbing into my car, checking my mirrors, looking at the road ahead. I am driving toward the life I have envisioned, becoming intentional about who I invite along for the ride. And just as importantly, who I will be that same kind of passenger for.
