Nonverbal Communication is the most important part!
One thing we don’t practice much is our body language. I found this recently and thought I needed to share this: You’ll usually hear “93% of communication is nonverbal.” That number is widely quoted—and widely misunderstood. Here’s the accurate breakdown. Where the 93% comes from The figure comes from research by Albert Mehrabian, who studied communication only when emotions or attitudes conflict with words. In those specific situations, he found: - 55% body language - 38% tone of voice - 7% words 55 + 38 = 93% nonverbal What that does not mean It does not mean: - 93% of all communication is nonverbal - Words don’t matter - Content is irrelevant If you’re giving directions, teaching math, or explaining a contract, words matter a lot. The real takeaway (and the useful one) - Words carry information - Tone and body language carry meaning - When words and nonverbal cues conflict, people trust the nonverbal That’s why someone can say “I’m fine” and no one believes them. Practical version (especially for stages, meetings, and fundraising) In persuasive, emotional, or leadership communication: - Nonverbal cues often matter more than the exact words - Confidence, pacing, eye contact, posture, and vocal energy drive trust - Words without congruent nonverbal delivery lose power This is why it is so important to video your performances and practice in front of a mirror a few times a week. You have to be purposeful in those movements!

@Robert Makosky I’m a therapist and used to work with kids. We did a phone manners class and I’d have one behind a wall and the other speaking. The one behind the wall had to determine if they were smiling or not.

@Robert Makosky very true!
My First Live Auction
Excitement and energy are definitely key. I learned to be loud as a ring man and that I can help bring energy to the room. Looking for bidders and waiting for the next! We raised over $600k and that felt amazing. I can’t wait for the next one which is February 24th. Looking forward to the day my sponsor lets me on the block! I didn’t get any videos, but this is how fancy smancy I got to dress!

My 2nd auction is Tuesday and 3rd is Saturday. 4 more in March and April. More to come in the next 3 quarters. Idk if I will be able to take the block at any point. But my sponsor says if the client will approve, she will get me up there.

I had an amazing time being a ring-man! It was my first live auction and I was so excited to be dressed all fancy and interacting with others. It felt great holding thousands of dollars in bids, even if just for a moment. Such a great cause and it felt good being a part of something bigger than myself!

Favorite Time to Practice
Loving the videos @Bobby D. Ehlert , they are great source of information and a fantastic refresher and motivator! Having competed in the IAC for the first time last year this has got me excited to start practicing now for next time! What is everyone’s favorite way or time to practice? I know mine is driving or with a microphone in front of my kids as the bidding audience. I don’t think you can beat the views from my practice location today!

I practice when driving, walking around the house, or penny auctions for fun! And, when someone asks me to share a chant. lol. I auction in my head often and just of the blue. Maybe someone says something that is auction related, then for kicks and giggles, I will do a little ditty of a chant.
