What’s your practise goal right now?
Right now, I’m working on my intonation and learning new tunes for a gig coming up at Ronnie Scott’s here in London. Would love to hear what everyone is mainly focusing on in their playing right now. Remember if you want some help working out or reaching your goals, you can get hold of my “coaching package” in the classroom. It’s 4 lessons with detailed practice plans and access to a month of VIP membership. (If you are already a member il give you a 5th lesson)

At last week's Q&A Matt discussed the benefits of really learning the chords of a tune. I've felt for some time now that I can hear and anticipate chords reasonably well, but following the Q&A, I decided to test myself. The video is the fruit of my labour this past week or so. ´On the Sunny side of the Street' using only chord tones (although I think a couple of stray non-chord tones might have found their way in). In fact sticking exclusively to chord tones was the most challenging aspect of the exercise for me. I naturally tend to connect up with more colourful notes, which sort of works most of the time. So here's one round of arpeggios followed by a round of pizzicato chords as recommended by Matt. Listening back to it, my bugbears of timing and tone need to be addressed but I definitely feel I have more command of the tune now.
Anytune transcribing tool
https://www.anytune.app/ This is the programme I found for transcription. Good for Mac, PC or as an app for phone or tablet. They give a month's free trial and then ask if you want to purchase for around 40€. It's really easy to use with great looping options, and also speed and pitch controls. What I really like is that when you loop, it automatically clicks to the nearest beat, so it repeats seamlessly in time. Great bit of kit if anyone fancies trying it out.

Hi Jan. Yes I think both these apps do the same job, although I haven't used Transcribe.
Q&A
What a useful Q&A on 30th March. Explored so many familiar frustrations.
Q&A questions for Monday afternoon
It’s Q&A time next Monday. Anybody got anything that hey want help with? Let me know in the comments?

Hi Matt. You suggested a few metronome tricks (2+4, only on 4, only every 8 beats) for those of us with timing problems. As I said, I tend to race. Sometimes when I concentrate on it, I feel I can play with a relaxed and comfortable groove, but my default is to push ahead. Excruciating to listen to recordings of myself! Any more approaches to sorting this?
