🎬 The Conversational Age #1
Welcome to the Conversational Age There are moments in history when the world changes so gradually that few people notice until they look back years later. The shift from horse-drawn transportation to the automobile did not happen overnight. Neither did the transition from handwritten letters to email, or from libraries to search engines. Looking back, each seems obvious. Living through them was another matter entirely. I believe we are living through another of those moments. Artificial intelligence is often described in terms of technology. We hear about larger models, faster processors, impressive benchmarks, and astonishing capabilities. While these developments are certainly important, they are not, in my opinion, the most significant part of the story. The real revolution is not taking place inside computers. It is taking place in conversations. For decades, we have become accustomed to communicating with technology in very rigid ways. We clicked buttons. We filled out forms. We memorized commands. We learned search syntax. We typed carefully chosen keywords into search engines, hoping they would return the information we needed. Success depended upon learning the language of the machine. Today, for the first time, the machine is learning the language of people. That is a profound change. Instead of asking, "Which button do I press?" we ask, "Can you help me understand this?" Instead of searching for isolated facts, we explore ideas. Instead of issuing commands, we begin conversations. It sounds simple, almost ordinary, yet it changes everything. Throughout history, every major advance in communication has expanded human capability. Writing allowed knowledge to survive beyond memory. Printing allowed ideas to spread across continents. The telephone connected voices separated by great distances. The Internet connected billions of people to information. Conversational artificial intelligence introduces something different. It allows us to interact with knowledge itself in a way that feels natural, dynamic, and collaborative.

║▌║█║▌│║ Sunrise 2027 #3
Every Product Gets a Digital Identity When people hear about Sunrise 2027, their first reaction is often to think, "So we are replacing one barcode with another." That is understandable. It is also a little like saying the Internet was simply a better telephone. The technology may look similar on the surface, but what it makes possible is entirely different. The real breakthrough is that individual products are beginning to receive their own digital identities. Notice I did not say "product types." I said "individual products." For decades, manufacturers have identified products by model numbers. Every jar of a particular brand of peanut butter looked identical to the checkout scanner. Every bottle of shampoo shared the same barcode. Every package of breakfast cereal appeared to be exactly the same. To a traditional barcode, they were. To a next-generation GS1 barcode, they do not have to be. One jar of peanut butter may have been produced on Monday morning in one factory, while another came from a different production line several days later. They may look identical sitting side by side on the grocery shelf, yet each has its own history. That history now has the opportunity to travel with the product. Imagine a manufacturer discovers a problem affecting one production run. Today, the evening news announces that every jar of a particular product is being recalled. Consumers search their cupboards, retailers remove entire shelves of merchandise, and perfectly good products often end up being discarded simply because there is no practical way to distinguish them from those that may actually be affected. Now imagine a different approach. A checkout scanner identifies not merely the product, but the exact production batch. Your smartphone does the same. Instead of recalling millions of items, the manufacturer recalls only those that were genuinely affected. Safer for consumers. Less waste for retailers. Greater confidence for everyone involved. The same thinking applies to food freshness. Anyone who has worked in retail knows that managing expiration dates can be a constant challenge. Products are checked manually, discounted near the end of their shelf life, or removed altogether.

From Lines to Intelligence In the first article of this series, I introduced Sunrise 2027 as one of those quiet technological revolutions that most people will not notice until it has become part of everyday life. This time, let us look beneath the surface and explore what is actually changing. For more than fifty years, we have become accustomed to seeing the familiar black lines printed on almost every product we purchase. We scan them at self-checkouts, watch cashiers pass them over laser scanners, and rarely give them a second thought. Yet those little lines are surprisingly limited. The barcode we have known for decades is called a one-dimensional, or 1D, barcode. The name is not particularly exciting, but it accurately describes how it works. All of the information is stored in a single direction, across the width of the code. Think of it as a street address. The address tells you where to find the house, but it tells you nothing about the people who live there, what the house looks like, or what is happening inside. To learn those things, you have to go somewhere else. Traditional barcodes work in much the same way. When a cashier scans a carton of milk, the barcode is not saying, "I am two litres of whole milk with an expiration date of Friday." Instead, it is saying something much simpler. "I am product number 123456789." The store's computer then searches its database for product number 123456789 and discovers everything else; the description, the current price, the tax category, the supplier, and any other detail required to complete the sale. The barcode itself is little more than a reference number. That approach has worked remarkably well for decades, but it has its limitations. Now imagine replacing that simple street address with an entire information package. That is the promise of the new two-dimensional, or 2D, barcode. Instead of storing information in only one direction, a 2D code stores information both horizontally and vertically. Those familiar square QR codes are one example, although Sunrise 2027 uses a standardized version developed by GS1 specifically for commercial applications.
