Another article mentioned that more than 80 percent of people in the region understand Catalan but fewer than a third use it regularly. Encara no* would be the correct phrase :) Però jo sí que parlo! I wholeheartedly co-sign this message, and I would say the same for any country, region and language. There are far too many people that rather than own that a new language challenges them, they flip the perspective and diminish the relevance or utility of the language—or worse, deflect by labeling its use as exclusively political. Cultural competency shouldn’t be optional. It’s social responsibility. Which, to answer your question, is the focus of my work as an artist, coach, and community organizer running proprietary professional development programs for changemakers. As my partner says, it doesn’t matter what you think. It’s theirs. And if you choose to live here, the least one can do is make an effort. I learned Catalan in two years. And while I recognize that I have a gift for learning languages, I also put in the work. A little goes a long way. Attitude is everything. 👏🏾
