Halal food in US Schools
Some schools in the country are adding halal meal options for Muslim students, and that has opened a wider debate about how schools handle special dietary needs. The contrast is what gets people talking: a religious dietary request may have a dedicated meal option, while another child may need gluten-free food because of celiac disease, another may have a serious peanut allergy, and another family may request kosher food. The rules and legal requirements are not identical, but from a parent’s point of view, the obvious question is why some accommodations appear easier to provide than others. If schools are going to expand special meal programs, should the same level of planning and access be available for medical conditions, allergies, and other religious dietary requirements as well? #schoollunch #halalmeals #dietaryneeds
