Calling somebody vs. calling to somebody
What I like most about digging in English is to discover its feeling. No dictionaries, explanations, rules, AI stuff, nothing of that kind. Just the right situation from which I can draw direct understanding. Look at this: "Why was my wife calling her friend on the phone, but not calling to her friend?" "Because calling to her friend on a phone would have hurt her friend's ears". You know what I mean?

I entirely agree with your premise however in this example "calling to somebody" I FEEL it might fall short if you are completely unaware of the structure.
