The process of track creation. Mixing after or during?
Hello guys. I need your opinion on how to distribute your time and efforts during the process of creating a track from scratch. I found myself in a methodological trap trying to mix during production and writing. I always do everything in parallel, however I'm in a doubt because it has some cons that I really feel. So I think if you try to mix or engineer the sound BEFORE you have completed the musical ideas you risk to spend much more time and even get very tired of the track you are working on. And I've got tired of a couple of latest tracks trying to make them sound as perfect as possible.

@Evgeny Bardyuzha how is it a bad habit? When I an closing in on tracks like this, I listen and take notes, try out what I took notes and run through until I have no notes. That for me is the criterion for being completed.

The OTG Plugin Regulars
It's not plugins, it's skills. But. No reason to reinvent the wheel! We all know @Owen Palmer you prefer certain plugins as staples in the group calls. Good workflows, big results for the effort. Lets name them! I'll maintain the list in this OP and will start us off with one. Soniformer

RhythmEcho v0.9.8m is out. I thought this would be a quick and insubstantial release with just a couple of convenience features. One of those features opened a Pandora's box of future problems, so I completely redid the underlying logic of the gui. The GUI looks almost the same -- with the striking replacement of attack and decay with a three-part bezier curve based envelope. This adds whole news dimensions to the soundscaping possibilities from gentle panning tremeloes based, as always, on your playing rather than a BPM or LFO, to jagged polyrhythmic gating, to more mundane things like getting the repeats out of the way of the kick or even out of the way of themselves. Try it out along with the rewritten reverse and pitch change buttons for brand new sounds. Despite the familiar look, I've redone the underlying architecture to connect to the DSP more logically, sort out a bunch of glitches in preset recall, and make bug tracking much simpler in the soon-to-be bug-free future (see note on Utopias as useful fantasies). In the process, I was able to get at the audio processing in a much finer detail. You will find the not-unpleasant effect of warbling is mostly gone. If you want it back, go for short delay times with a little feedback against a longer delay. Nothing lost but a huge gain in sound quality that opens up whole new vistas of less glitchy, more usable delays. Not that glitchy is a bad thing. Finally, and thanks for new tester Bill D, I have brought back the max delay at the other end of the min delay to deal with a case where sparse playing led to short controlled echoes followed by space to have an awkwardly long first delay time on resumption. Now just set the max delay to the longest delay you want in your piece and the problem is solved. ~Rich PS, for my remix contest entry I used five RhythmEchoes, nothing else. The drums at least, came out pretty cool.

https://youtu.be/mJLT5sSVRdY?si=Zc4vhYEj6Oeu84Mg Just released RhythmEcho v0.9.8n, thanks to some suggestions on KVR from @rockheyday, @pekbro, @sandandpaint, @LoopyC. I'd love to hear what you think. These push into territory that was planned for rhythmXO, the version that moves beyond echoes to .... well, now you can get a taste of that with the little XO button in the top panel. It depends on two other new features, text entry for everything and non-fraction constants like the golden ratio, pi or [what you put into it]. These features are definitely in the realm of FAFO and capable of terrible as well as beautiful results. Sometimes the terror of terrible is just the thing though, what can I say, who am I to prevent your misuse of my beautiful art ;^). There are numerous little additions and fixes, too much to list here, but detailed on the installer page at https://way.net/rhythmecho/installers
today's rabbit hole: the map is not the territory
OTG asked me to post on this. here ya go. "The map is not the territory" comes from Prince Alfred Korzybski, as part of his 1931 theory of General Semantics and the absolute only thing anyone remembers about him other than he was a prince: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Map%E2%80%93territory_relation ...And there is a lovely story drawing upon the aphorism from Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges in 1946 about a king so obsessed with science of cartography he would only accept a map made to the exact scale of his kingdom... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On_Exactitude_in_Science For me, the takeaway is we can never get exact exact, and if we could it would be a problem, so the thing to do with representing anything in music, art, language, as well as science, is to bag exactness as something achievable (praiseworthy if unattainable goal sometimes maybe? just be aware that achieving it comes with its own Borgian set of troubles). The smarter move is to pay attention to the cuts you make: what you gain in the reduction and what you lose, always with a little uncertainty left over and some room for the muses. i hereby claim a prize for most abstract thing said today.

@Hygro Scope That’sa perfect way to think about music theory too. A useful reduction to help find your way around maybe but no substitute for the experience. Gets you to Stonehenge but does not substitute for the experience of being there. https://way.net/fw5/#Henges And (just my notes): https://way.net/fw5/#Sounds%20of%20Stonehenge
