I met you at the Willamette Writers coffee meeting. I was with what you presented about this community
Looking for a book editor?
Finding the right book editor isn't easy. You have to know what you need, when you need to have that type of editing, the four different types of editing (developmental, line, copy, and proofreading), and if the editor you're using is a good personality fit for you and if they are a good fit for your book. There are lots of editors out there, and one thing I know for sure: most of the problems I hear from authors about using editors stem from working with someone who edits "part-time" as a side gig to their main job. I've seen people from the fields of education, consulting, and other industries that were totally unrelated to publishing and writing claim that they could successfully edit or write a book. Nothing could be further from the truth! A professional teacher who has an English degree does not qualify as a professional book editor. There are many facets of editing and publishing that an English degree, or its experience, simply doesn't cover. The one exception: part-time editors who have spent their professional careers in publishing and are phasing out their work because they plan to retire soon. @Michael McConnell is currently writing a book on finding an editor. In the meantime, check out my podcast playlist from Self Publishing for Thought Leaders on audio, or subscribe to my podcast on YouTube

I have to add get sample work from a prospective editor. You need to know the scope of what they do and how it will look when you get it it. I didn’t do this and now I don’t know what I’m paying for. I don’t get the manuscript until II pay. I’ve asked for a sample so I can see what’s been done. I’ve heard some editors changge so much it doesn’t look like what you wrote, My publishing editor sends my ms back with changes marked so I can accept it or we talk about it. I hope she sends me the requested pages.

@Sheryl Robinson I’m curious. What does that comment mean? Expect for free (Girl Scouts)
Second revision
I opened my 2nd revision yesterday and finished it an hour ago. It went easier than I thought. Most changes were grammatical. She added or deleted words here and there. Anything that she questioned I addressed or made the changes. She suggested changes and a few I held firm on. I hope they are acceptable. I told her I’d rather come to a compromise than my having to give up on my concept. I already had to give up on my cover idea. More when I get the next revision back

@Liora Vale thank you. Before I read this post I crafted an email stating I observed great covers on the publisher website. I told the marketing manager I showed the cover to a number of people and asked if the cover would entice them to pick it up and read the back. 95 percent said no. Then I showed the ai cover I made with the same blurb and they said yes they would read the back of tat cover. I sent both to her and asked her to pick which one she would read. We’ll see if the owner agrees, or I’m stuck with the original. It’s not as good as ones they show in their website book store .

I have one endorsement lined up. She’s a content creator on Substack and I’ve known her for years. She’s an amazing creator. She’s just begun her page this past year.
