Day 2 Report
Sites Built : Zero
Transcript: (yep) ChatGPT
In this video, I give an update on day two of my project to build 99 directories in 99 days. To clarify, I've been researching and experimenting with the process, but yesterday was the first official day of actual building. My focus is on creating directories using WordPress, with a specific domain for each, targeting the US market initially, with possible experiments in Dubai and Australia.
I talk about the challenges I'm facing, especially when it comes to obtaining data for the listings. It’s not as simple as just scraping it, considering the scale of this project. I need to automate the process, but I also want to ensure quality, because manually entering data for every directory is just not feasible. I'm not using standard directory plugins or templates because I want my directories to look attractive and professional—this way, people will engage with them and they won’t seem too automated.
One big challenge I’m dealing with is data updates. Unlike other directory systems where users can update their own listings, my system requires me to manually make the updates for paid users. I think this will work well for local businesses that aren't tech-savvy and just want to pay for an upgrade and move on.
Another issue is getting images for the directories. Scraping images in bulk is tough, and I know how to do it in some cases, but dynamically inserting them into the directory makes it even harder. I’m working on creating a core directory that will serve as the template for all the others. Once that’s done, I’ll be able to replicate the process. I’m hoping to have this core directory ready by day six of the project.
I also mention that when I’m scraping data for rehab centers, it’s costing me money. For example, scraping the top 100 cities cost me $30, but if I were to scrape all the data for the entire US, it would cost $170, which really drives up the cost of the project.
Over the next few days, I plan to show you some of the pages I’m building and explain why some of them have to be done manually. Not everything can be automated, and I’ll explain why. I want to make sure the directories look appealing to potential buyers or sponsors, so there’s effort behind each one to make it look good.
In the long run, my goal is for at least a third of the directories to generate revenue. I’ll keep documenting the process, including the tools I’m using and how I’m managing costs. I’m optimistic about the project, but I’m aware of the risks, and by day 99, I hope to see some solid results.
