How to BONESMASH gonians?

Hello moggers,

From which angle should I bonesmash my gonians to increase jaw width, like this gentleman in the first picture has done?

I have tried smashing it from the bottom but I was never able to get a pump, and I fear it will just make my ramus taller if I smash from that point.

So which angle should I smash from, and how do I do it to get a pump?
